What makes a monogram work

A monogram is two or three letters treated as a single shape. That constraint is what makes it hard: the letters have to stay legible while behaving like one mark, which is a different problem from arranging a symbol next to a word.

The details that decide whether a monogram succeeds are small and specific — how the counters (the enclosed spaces inside letters) line up, whether an overlap creates an accidental third shape, whether the stroke weight survives being scaled down to a favicon. Those are the things the generator is tuned for, and the reason a general-purpose logo maker tends to produce monograms that look fine at 400 px and mush at 16.

• Interlocked, stacked or nested. The same initials can be locked together, stacked vertically, or set one inside another — each reads differently, and you see them side by side rather than one at a time.
• Geometric or calligraphic. A monogram built from circles and straight lines says something different from one built from a connected script. Say which feel you want in the brief.
• Framed or free-standing. A containing shape — a circle, a shield, a rounded square — gives a monogram a fixed silhouette, which helps on avatars and app icons.

What is a monogram logo?

How many letters should a monogram use?

Two or three. One letter is a brandmark and needs to carry the whole identity on its own; four or more stops reading as a shape and starts reading as an acronym you have to decode.

Will the monogram still work as a favicon?

That is an explicit constraint in how the marks are generated — the silhouette and any negative-space move have to stay identifiable at 16 px. It's worth checking the export at small sizes before committing.

What if the initials are awkward?

Some letter pairs fight each other — round against round, or two letters with strong diagonals. Generating several directions is the fastest way to find out whether the answer is interlocking, stacking, or dropping to a single letter.
